Zootography : The Toronto Zoo

I embarked on a 7 hour walk around photo session with a few friends on the weekend. The Toronto zoo was our playground and the conditions were more than perfect for some zootography. I’m quite proud of the shots I managed to take despite the crowds and limited angles. Several crying babies, whiny brats and only a small lunch later, 280 (shock!) pictures graced my compact flash card ready for transfer. Have a look and let me know if you like the photos, any comments are appreciated!

A little background

Ever since the tender age of 5, I have always been the one behind the camera. I fondly remember mixing in my own tire screeching soundtrack as I recorded our family road trips on video. As the years went by, my interest in photography increased on par with it’s accessility. I am a digital man myself, starting off with a very early digital camera and growing from simple point and shoots to an SLR today. I took several photography courses in highschool and college, but found fundamentals boring and uninsteresting. I was more interested in actually taking photos and as a hands-on type of guy, a camera in my hand was only natural. The decision to take my hobby and turn it into a business sparked several years ago but only recently was made into reality. My business partner and soon to be cousin Paul shows a great passion for the art and we decided on combining our skills to share them with whomever wanted a part of their past frozen in history. That’s it for now, hopefully I can write more as the business grows. Thanks for reading, ciao.

Flash? Or no flash?

Do you shoot alot of indoor material…? or do you shoot in cloudy places where natural light is hard to come by…? do you shoot close moving things…? such as birds, insects…etc. these are situations where you need flash. there is no hiding from it. even with the steadiest of hands or a tripod you will always run into motion blur. you need to keep your shutter speed up in order to capture that moment. thats where your flash comes in. now there is a huge difference between a point and shoot flash vs a pop up flash on a dslr. point and shoot flash are very limited. not alot of power behind them then you deal with flash burn. or white outs. where the objects are almost like ghostly white. and you have limited distance. 5 ft max and in near black conditions try to be 3 ft no more or else you wont capture your image. if you get closer than that you will not like the results guaranteed. with a pop up flash on a dslr you have a little more power behind you and you can reach 10 ft easily, but you can also play with your iso and rely less on light and flash but expect more grainy images. dont get me wrong point and shoot cameras for the most part have iso sensitivity options, but to be honest i believe they are mostly for show. sorry to be bias but the dslr gives you the best of the best. just takes a little more work.

you can also get external flashes which extend your distance anywhere from 25 ft to over 40ft. then you can also get into wireless flashes and multiple flashes. it all depends on your application. flashes are like math equations but dont be frightened cause you can just set it to fill flash and most cameras will communicate with the flash and you will pull a stellar shot. if you are more skilled and have the option you can go wireless and bounce your flash off various objects and you will achieve interesting results.

these are just a few ideas for people. all 3 that are currently reading this blog with some kind of intent on using my advice lol.

anyways my bottom line is that it never hurts to have a flash in ur arsenal of tools for photography you can always find yourself in situations where you are using your flash so it never is a bad idea to have one or to properly learn to use one. it also doesnt hurt to snap a couple useless shots to get the results you are looking forward. this is the beauty of digital limitless possibilities without consequence.

newho enough from me. have a nice friday for catholics good friday.

keep smiling

Save your workspace

Nothing is more annoying than loading up Photoshop to see that your beloved workspace windows have been reset. Avoid the hassle of resizing by saving your workspace. Now when you load up photoshop and your layer panel is nowhere to be found, simply load up your saved workspace and commence designing. Share your comments if you found this helpful (as obvious as it may be for some.)

Enjoy!

Photoshop save-as dialogue freeze

Just imagine yourself as you are about to save your precious photoshop file when the dialogue box pops up and disappears instantly, leaving you with a frozen program and deep regret for not having saved earlier? If you are a user of dual monitors, you may be plagued with this problem. In any case, if this happens to you try pressing ESC and voila! your photoshop will be alive again. In some cases, the save-as dialogue box will appear BEHIND photoshop. To solve this problem, restore your program so you can re-size it within windows and the proceed to drag most of it to the right. Upon saving again, you will notice that half of your save as box will appear behind photoshop. Simply click it and save away, problem solved!

Once this problem has been fixed, I have found that it does not happen in the same way again. If it were to occur, just follow the instructions and save yourself the hassle of thinking a reinstall will fix it!
